Purple Hair Dye
Purple hair is all the rage. From pastel purple hair to a deep eggplant hair color and everything in between, CVS has you covered with the supplies you need to get the purple locks of your dreams.
How To Dye Your Hair Purple
Before dying your hair purple, you will need to start with clean, dry, and light colored hair. If you are naturally light blonde, you can skip this next step, but for anyone with darker hair, you’ll first need to bleach the parts of it that you want to dye in order to allow the purple hair color to show through. You can use a bleaching kit to do this. In some cases, you may be able to get dark purple hair without bleaching first, but if you are after lavender locks, keep in mind that achieving light purple hair will require bleaching.
Once your hair has been bleached, you are ready to dye it. For dark purple hair, choose an eggplant or plum shade of purple hair dye. For light purple hair, choose hair dye in a light purple shade such as lavender. It is a good idea to test a small piece of your hair first to make sure that the color comes out looking the way you want before you commit to a head full of purple hair!
Before you begin, be sure to read the directions on the box carefully, lay out any supplies you’ll need, and consider having a friend nearby if you think you’ll need help. When applying the color, it is a good idea to work from the top down in small sections to ensure proper coverage. And don’t forget that hair dye stains. Deep purple hair requires highly pigmented dye, so be extra cautious. However, even pastel purple shades can ruin your clothes or surroundings, so work in an area that’s easy to clean (like a tiled bathroom) and wear clothes that you don’t mind getting stains on.
How Long Does Purple Hair Dye Last?
There are two kinds of purple hair dye, and the type you choose will determine how long you can expect your purple hair color to last. Permanent purple hair dye is the most pigmented, so it lasts longer, but may do more damage to your hair due to its formulation. If cared for properly (infrequent washing, staying out of the sun, and only using color safe shampoo) permanent purple hair dye can last up to 4 – 6 weeks. However, unlike more conventional shades, the vibrancy of your purple dye job may start to fade in as little as one week. Your other option is semi permanent hair dye, which is sometimes called temporary purple hair dye and doesn’t last as long. Because of the chemical formulation of semi permanent hair dye, the color will eventually wash out of your hair entirely. After four to six shampoos, most of the purple will have been removed from your hair, but it is important to know that the vibrancy of your color may start to fade even sooner. Because of this, semi permanent hair dye may need to be reapplied more often, which can cause damage to your hair. Additionally, it is important to know that semi permanent hair dye won’t bleach your hair, so unless you already have extremely light or purple tinted hair, you’ll need to bleach your hair before dying it.
