What Are Pringles®?

Pringles® are a stackable snack originally crafted to address common complaints about chips. It seems that consumers were tired of greasy, broken potato chips that went stale in the bag. So the Proctor & Gamble company set out to make the perfect chip. The unique saddle shape and tubular packaging took years to develop. Getting the flavor and texture just right took even longer. At first, Pringles® "Newfangled Potato Chips" were sold only in select areas. Since their introduction in 1968, Pringles® have been made in more than 160 different flavors and sold in at least 140 countries.

What Are Pringles® Made With?

Most companies make potato chips with thinly sliced potatoes. Pringles® are much different. They're made with a blend of dehydrated potato flakes, rice, wheat and corn. The main ingredients are blended with vegetable oils, an emulsifier and salt. Other ingredients vary by flavor and could include yeast extract, malted barley, bran flour or sour cream.

Are Pringles® Gluten Free?

Gluten is a combination of two proteins found in many grains, including wheat. People with certain medical conditions, allergies and gluten sensitivities need to avoid it. Although Pringles® are made with gluten-free ingredients like potatoes, rice and corn, Pringles® potato crisps are not gluten-free. When scanning product labels, you'll find that wheat is also one of the main ingredients. Some flavors are also made with barley and rye.

Are Pringles® Vegan?

The answer to this question tends to depend on the flavor you choose. Some Pringles® are vegan; others are not. If you prefer vegan options, you'll want to stay away from cheese and sour cream flavors and several others. Pringles® original flavored crisps are vegan-friendly. So are the Texas BBQ Sauce and Smokey Bacon flavors. While their flavor may be 'meaty', the ingredients are not.

What Company Makes Pringles® Potato Crisps?

Pringles, the 4th largest snack brand worldwide, were introduced by Proctor & Gamble (P&G) in 1968. The company eventually expanded the product line to include many flavors, including limited edition and seasonal runs. The Kellogg Company purchased Pringles® in 2012 as part of a corporate plan to expand its international snack business.
