What Is Prilosec?

Prilosec is a proton pump inhibitor that is designed to help relieve and block frequent heartburn. Prilosec contains the active ingredient omeprazole and was the first drug from this type of medication to be released. Prilosec OTC is often referred to by users simply as Prilosec. Prilosec OTC is available over the counter, so you don’t need a prescription to purchase it. Prescription Prilosec is only available with a prescription from your doctor.

Prilosec OTC is used to help relieve frequent heartburn, which is defined as heartburn that occurs two or more days per week. Prilosec OTC should not be confused with prescription Prilosec, however. Prescription Prilosec is sometimes prescribed by doctors to help treat gastric ulcers, duodenal ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and erosive esophagitis.

What Is In Prilosec OTC?

The active ingredient in Prilosec OTC is omeprazole. Prilosec OTC also contains a number of inactive ingredients, including but not limited to glyceryl monostearate, hydroxypropyl cellulose, and hypromellose. For a full list of ingredients, please refer to the label on the product packaging. If you have questions or concerns about the ingredients in Prilosec OTC, you should talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

How Does Prilosec Work?

Prilosec is a proton pump inhibitor. When you eat, gastric cells in your stomach produce acid to help break down food. Proton pump inhibitors block an enzyme that allows acid to be released from a proton pump in the gastric parietal cells, thereby preventing too much acid from being released and potentially causing painful heartburn symptoms and/or damage to your esophagus, stomach, and intestines.

Prilosec OTC is not designed to provide immediate relief. Instead, Prilosec OTC is designed to be a 14-day regimen to help control acid production. Because everyone’s body chemistry is different, the time it takes for you to start feeling relief from heartburn symptoms may vary. In some cases, it may take 1 – 4 days of treatment for Prilosec to take full effect.

When To Take Prilosec OTC

Prilosec OTC should be taken once a day. Ideally, you should take your daily dose with a glass of water before your first meal of the day.

Prilosec OTC products must be swallowed whole – do not crush or chew Prilosec OTC. Always refer to the directions on the product packaging for how to take Prilosec properly. If you have questions or concerns about how to take Prilosec OTC, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

How Long Can You Take Prilosec OTC?

Prilosec is designed as a 14-day regimen. Do not take Prilosec for more than 14 consecutive days. If your symptoms return after 14 days, you should talk to your doctor about what may be causing your heartburn and what treatment option is best for you.

You should not take more than 3 courses of Prilosec OTC within a year without checking in with your doctor to ensure that your heartburn is not caused by a more serious underlying condition.

What Are The Side Effects of Prilosec OTC?

Prilosec side effects are typically minimal. If adverse effects do occur, the most likely side effects of Prilosec are headache, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and gas. If you experience bothersome side effects while taking Prilosec OTC, you should contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

How Much Is Prilosec?

While pricing may vary, a 14-day supply of Prilosec OTC typically costs less than $15. In some cases, coupons and sales may be able to help lower your costs. You can buy Prilosec OTC at most local CVS stores. You can also order Prilosec online and we will ship it right to your door.
