Dulcolax

Dulcolax is an over-the-counter laxative that contains bisacodyl, an ingredient that is used to relieve constipation. Some people take Dulcolax to help empty and prepare the bowel for various surgeries and examinations. You can purchase Dulcolax at almost any drugstore including CVS Pharmacy and online. It comes as a liquid, chewable, or suppository.

Dulcolax tablets typically start to work within six to 12 hours. Suppositories work faster and typically take between just 15 and 60 minutes to work with the average timeframe being closer to 30 minutes. The Dulcolax stool softener works in 12 to 72 hours, and the liquid laxative and chews work in as little as 30 minutes to six hours.

Dulcolax may last for up to 16 hours, but the full effects should wear off sooner. It's best to take this product before bedtime so that it has time to work and you can go on about your day.

Adults and children ages 12 and older may take one to three Dulcolax tablets as a single dose for up to seven days. If you're new to taking laxatives, one to two tablets in a single daily dose is recommended. Take the pill 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime to produce a bowel movement when you awaken the next morning. If you are taking the liquid or chewable, or you are using the suppository, read the package instructions for dosing recommendations.

Side effects of Dulcolax are mild but may include nausea, vomiting, and/or diarrhea. Other side effects may include a slight burning sensation when you have a bowel movement and some stomach cramps. All of these symptoms are normal and should pass fairly quickly.
