SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It's a measure of how well a sunscreen will protect you from UVB rays. The higher the SPF, the more sun protection the sunscreen will provide. SPF shows you how long the UVB rays from the sun would take to start turning your skin red. This only applies when you use the sunscreen as directed compared to the time that you'd spend without any sunscreen at all. For example, a sunscreen with an SPF of 50 means that it should take 50 times longer to get a sunburn when the sunscreen is used properly as opposed to how long it would take for you to get sunburn without it. Either way, it's recommended that you apply sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 15 daily to keep your skin safe from sun exposure that you get every day.

Sunscreen might keep you from getting a deep, dark, tan, but you may still get a light tan depending on several factors. The higher the SPF of your sunscreen, the less likely you'll end up with a nice, golden tan. The purpose of sunscreen is to protect your skin from the harsh UVA and UVA rays of the sun, so if you plan on getting a tan, don't expect a rich golden color while wearing sunscreen. Even if your goal is to get a gorgeous tan, experts recommend that you wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 at all times when you're in the sun. SPF 15 blocks approximately 93-percent of UVB radiation, protecting your skin while allowing you to get a nice, subtle tan in the process. You are also able to get that perfect golden tan without harsh sun exposure with self tanners. Self tanners come as lotions, mousse, foam and spray.

Suntan lotion may help increase tan development while protecting your skin from the sun. While they have some sun protections, suntan lotions normally do not have enough. These are not recommended for children or people with lighter skin. Commonly, suntan lotions have under 15 SPF. It is meant to be a weak sunscreen that is supposed to promote a tan. Some people may choose to use suntan oil which also helps get that Summer time glow. The best suntan lotions are hydrating and water resistant. There are specific suntan lotions made for tanning beds. These types of suntan lotions tend to come with bronzer to give your skin a bronze glow. Suntan lotion is essential when using a tanning bed. The rays in tanning beds can be directly damaging to your skin so you need to make sure that your skin is being protected. Suntan lotion to wear outside is not the same as tanning bed lotion.
