Multifocal and Bifocal Contacts

In the not-too-distant past, contact lenses were only available for people with easy-to-match prescriptions. If you had astigmatism, needed bifocals or had other eye issues, you were automatically stuck with glasses. That is no longer the case. Multifocal and bifocal contact lenses are now available for people who have refractive errors or are experiencing presbyopia (the normal, age-related decline in near vision). Multifocal and bifocal contact lenses allow you to have clear vision even with these issues and without the need for glasses.

What are Multifocal Contacts?

Multifocal contact lens is a catch-all term for contact lenses with more than one power, including bifocal contacts. In addition to segmented bifocal contact lenses, multifocal contacts come in concentric and aspheric vision designs. Concentric multifocal contact lenses contain the power for seeing distant objects in the center of the lens, surrounded by concentric rings of near and distance powers. Aspheric multifocal contact lenses feature a gradual change in power from far to near, with no visible lines in the lenses.

How Do Bifocal Contacts Work?

Bifocal contact lenses work very much like bifocal glasses. They have two power segments, with an obvious line of separation between the distance correction on top and the near correction below. Depending on whether you are looking close or far away, your eye looks through either one or the other.

Pros of Bifocal & Multifocal Contacts

Multifocal and bifocal contacts offer sharp, natural vision for varying distances from near to far based on the needs of your eyes. There is an easy adaptation period for switching from unattractive bifocals to contacts. These convenient contacts offer excellent depth perception, and they are beneficial for people with irregular, cone-shaped corneas.

Multifocal and bifocal contacts offer a convenient, comfortable and clear solution for many people with refractive errors or presbyopia. You should work with your eye doctor to figure out if they are the right choice or you.
